The combination of a short bench, a few bad breaks and some very costly penalties proved to be the undoing for the senior Red Hawks football team in its season opener 27-13 loss against the St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School Saints on Friday in Peterborough.
“The game was a good learning experience and we will move forward with a positive attitude to our next game,” co-coach Raavo Laidla wrote in an email.
Laidla adds refereeing was inconsistent and with only 28 players the team was forced to play on both sides of the ball. He said despite this his team played well.
Scoring came from Nolan Flood on a touchdown catch from quarterback Rylan Gwyn, who also ran it in while McKay Coneybeare kicked a convert.
“The boys made a valiant comeback effort but just fell a little short,” he said.
