More than 20 individuals were recognized for their commitment to bringing healthy food to Haliburton County kids at a luncheon held on June 1 at Bonnieview Inn.
The annual event is organized by Food for Kids coordinator Aaron Walker, who commended the individuals for their time and commitment to the program.
“There’s no greater heart than that of a volunteer,” said Walker. “Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time but they have the heart.”
Walker said over the years the program has struggled with funding, however that changed due to the work and efforts of the Food for Kids steering committee.
With support from the Trillium Lakelands District School Board, thanks to director of education Larry Hope, and businesses and individuals, Food for Kids is now in a strong position, said Walker.
A recent barbecue fundraiser spearheaded by Sears raised more than $8,000, reported Walker, and at the volunteer luncheon Haliburton Foodland presented a $4,500 donation to Food for Kids.
Food for Kids is always seeking out more volunteers to help with the healthy snack program. Anyone interested can contact Walker at firstname.lastname@example.org.
