Reflecting on Red Hawks autumn performances
The junior Red Hawks ended their Kawartha High School League season getting edged out 14-7 by Thomas A. Stewart Secondary on Friday, Nov. 2. TASS went on to play St. Peter’s, which beat the Hawks a week earlier 31-7. The Hawks finished with a 2-4 record. They started the season in impressive fashion beating Fenelon Falls 20-0 and followed it up with another win, beating Crestwood 35-13. However the team lost four games to end the season, which included narrowly losing to Holy Cross 24-14, Adam Scott by 18-6 before the 31-7 loss to St. Peter.
Winning spirit during losing season
During a Kawartha High School Senior Football League season where there was a lack of roster depth to the senior Red Hawks depth chart, forcing the team to play “ironman football,” the red and white’s league highlight was beating St. Peter 28-20 on the road for their lone win of the Kawartha Senior Boys Football League’s six game season. Another close game for the Hawks was against Holy Cross, which beat the red and white 19-7 on Friday, Oct. 5. Haliburton finished the season with a 1-5 record.
Rugby team season ends on the road
After winning two of three games (one loss was a defaulted 14-0 loss when an official didn’t come to Haliburton), the Red Hawks varsity girls’ rugby team hit their stride and achieved a competitiveness not experienced before. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the Hawks lost a heart breaker 22-17 to visiting St. Mary after leading the entire game before St. Mary scored a pair of tries in the second half. Haliburton lost the next week 33-17 to Cobourg and they finished the regular season 2-5. In the A/AA Kawartha semi-finals the Red Hawks lost to Holy Cross 60-0 to end their season. Holy Cross went on to win the A/AA Kawartha Championship final with 60-0 win over Adam Scott to earn a berth to COSSA.
Return to pitch for Hawks soccer program
The Red Hawks soccer program returned to the pitch this autumn after a two-year hiatus.
They started out well, winning their first Kawartha High School Senior Boys’ League game 4-1 over Fenelon Falls. Although the team lost their next three to finish the season 1-3, followed by a Kawartha A semi-final 2-nil lost to Port Hope to end the season, the team’s coach Robin Gervais said the team played “much better against them than we did in our regular season game against Port Hope.”
The Hawks lost 3-nil to Port Hope on Wednesday, Oct. 10.
Port Hope lost the Kawartha final 2-nil to Campbellford, who advanced to COSSA.

Hawks volleyball team ends run in semi-finals
The Red Hawks’ junior coach provided the following summary of the season:
“Season results were better than expected this year. The team worked hard at practices to pursue their goal of a COSSA berth. We defeated five teams in the regular season including all the single A division competition. We played St. Thomas in the Kawartha A semi-final but were defeated in four games in and best of five game match. Coaches Mikie Gaffney and [Brett Caputo] are really proud of how far we have come as a volleyball program in two years and look forward to season.”
