Red Hawks win streak ends at eight

By Gord Cochrane

On Monday, Jan. 18, the Haliburton Highlands Secondary School (HHSS) senior basketball team saw its eight game win streak come to an end.

The Red Hawks travelled to Fenelon Falls and lost their first Kawartha conference game, 35-31.  After an extended layoff for the winter holidays, the Red Hawks were not as sharp as before the break. They trailed 8-6 at the end of the first quarter, 14-10 at halftime and 23-18 after three quarters.
HHSS shot 22 per cent for the game and committed 18 turnovers.

The Hawks’ highest scorer was Hunter Smith with 12 points while teammate  Nick Thompson led the team in rebounding with eight.
Despite the loss, the Red Hawks are still tied with I.E. Weldon Secondary School at the top of the Kawartha West conference, each with 6-1 records.  HHSS plays at Weldon on Feb. 11 for the conference championship.
