The HHSS girls soccer teams travelled to Port Hope this past Wednesday to take part in the Kawartha championships. The senior girls needed to win their semi-final game not only to advance to the finals but also to qualify for the COSSA playoffs. The juniors had already advanced to the finals of the Kawartha playoffs and qualified for COSSA where they will defend last season’s championship.
First up the seniors faced Campbellford. The two teams were evenly matched and took part in a back and forth battle. Campbellford dominated the possession battle early on and although the Red Hawks countered with some quick counterattacks it was Campbellford who opened the scoring from a scramble in front of the net. The HHSS girls responded with some pressure of their own and were awarded a penalty kick on a hand ball in the penalty area call. Natalya Gimon nailed the kick into the corner of the net to tie the game.
Campbellford were also awarded a penalty kick later in the game but goalkeeper Kiera Casey made the save to keep the game even. Unfortunately Campbellford managed to score later in the half and then held off the Red Hawks for the win. Coach Amy Klose was disappointed with the results but thanked the graduating players for their efforts over the past four years.
The junior girls faced the Kenner Rams in their final. They were looking to improve their performance after losing 3-0 to the Peterborough school earlier in the year.
The Red Hawks started out really well using passing combinations and great teamwork to dominate. They struck first as Hayley Boylan picked up a loose ball around midfield weaved through a couple defenders and then outpaced a couple more and slotted the ball past the keeper and into the corner. Kenner tied the game up in the dying seconds of the first half from a corner kick that the defenders failed to clear. Kenner scored again in the second half on another scramble in front of the net. The Hawks pressed the opposition and despite some promising attacks could not find the back of the net.
Brook Stover was named player of game by the Kenner team for her outstanding play. The girls will play again next Wednesday in the COSSA playoffs.
