Don’t forget classical musicians
April 7, 2015
Haliburton has welcomed even more Juno award winners and nominees than Lynda Shadbolt mentioned in her column last week (Green Meadow, March 31). Lynda included mainly performers from the folk and country genres, but we’ve also had many from the classical genre. The Haliburton Concert Series presents classical music performers each year, including many Juno award winners and nominees. All of the concerts in its 2015 season include Juno nominees or winners! The Gryphon Trio (May 2) won the Juno for Classical Album of the Year in 2004 and 2011. The Elmer Iseler Singers (Sept. 26) were nominated in 2011. Peter Tiefenbach of the piano duo Kortgaard and Tiefenbach (Oct. 25) was nominated in 1993. Performers in recent years have included these nominees and winners: pianists Marc-Andre Hamelin, David Jalbert, Jamie Parker, and Robert Silverman, soprano Suzie LeBlanc, mezzo-soprano Jean Stilwell, flautist Susan Hoeppner, violinist Scott St. John, trumpeter Guy Few, and bassoonist Nadina Mackie Jackson. Our little community is indeed fortunate to have the opportunity to hear so many gifted performers.
