There are going to be a couple of “battles” of sorts next week in Haliburton County. Members of the Haliburton Highlands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police, will be facing off against soldiers from Canadian Forces Base Petawawa, in a friendly game of hockey.

The municipality of Highlands East will be paying Wilberforce pharmacy owner Khosrow Eshkour $45,000 to help cover the renovation costs for the medical centre. Council decided at its Jan. 26 meeting that $25,000 would be paid now, with the balance to be paid when the centre is done.

Haliburton County councillors discussed the 2012 budget at their meeting Jan. 25. The county must raise approximately $12 million of its approximately $18.5 million budget through taxation and it looks like councillors are aiming for a tax levy increase in the neighbourhood of two per cent.

A 70-year-old man from Highlands East was charged by Bancroft OPP Sunday, Jan. 29 after his Ford car hit a GMC SUV on Highway 118. The 77-year-old driver of the other car was from Quinte West and was uninjured in the collision.
