Scouts Canada has sold a 101-acre stretch of land along Drag Lake. Originally posted at $1.4 million, the small piece of the Haliburton Scout Reserve was sold for $1.25 million on June 19.
“This means we are able to move forward with the capital projects as planned to revitalize both Haliburton Scout Reserve and Woodland Trails,” an open letter to Scouts reads.
One Scout who opposed the land sale said he still isn’t happy about what happened.
J.T. Pickering started a petition and Facebook group to stop the sale. In an email he told the Echo, “while it sounds great for them to say ‘we’re only selling 100 acres out of 5,000, it won’t make a difference,’ the truth is that a lot of those 4,900 remaining acres is impassable swamp that is, for all scout-camp-related purposes, essentially inaccessible and useless. One of the most important parts of the reserve is now gone.”
Pickering has worked at the Scout Reserve previously, but wasn’t accepted to work there this year.
