Youth after-school programming restarts 0

By Jenn Watt

Youth Unlimited may be temporarily homeless, but its programming for local youth continues.
Using resources around town, the Christian organization will continue its popular programming starting this week.
“It’s been the craziest month,” Jamie McMahon, director of the Haliburton Highlands chapter of Youth Unlimited, said.
“For the last two weeks in June everything got dispersed,” he said.
That was when the school board evicted everyone from the Victoria Street school building where Youth Unlimited had been operating rent-free for years.
The building is now up for sale.
Undeterred, McMahon has been scouting new locations and thinks he may have found a good one, but now must fundraise to pay the rent.
“Having your own space allows you to do more,” he said.
This summer, three weeks kids’ camp went off successfully with strong community support.
For $30 a week, 20 kids were treated to water sports, arts activities and games in Minden and Haliburton. McMahon thanked the Haliburton Rotary, RPM marina, Boatwerks and the Haliburton Curling Club for financial and in-kind support.
This fall, the annual Halloween Carnival will again be held, though its location isn’t yet settled on.
Office space has been provided to Youth Unlimited by Lakeside Baptist Church.
Starting this week:
Wednesdays – Haven Minden for grades 5 to 8 students, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Archie Stouffer Elementary School library. After-school program including crafts, snacks, activities and talk time.
